It's a sunny day in sweltering Swansea, and Dylan Thomas' "graveyard of ambition" has come to life. Bryn Cartwright, wealthy roofing contractor, Rugby Club Chairman and local kingpin involved in all manner of dubious transactions, smugly rules the roost until Fatty Lewis has an accident working on one of Bryn's dodgy roofing jobs. Fatty heads an eccentric family: daughter Adie is a receptionist at a seedy massage parlour, and his two sons Jeremy and Julian - "The Twins" - like to "borrow" expensive cars from their unsuspecting owners, usually whilst under the influence of any illegal substances that they may have at hand. Following his accident, Fatty ends up in hospital, and The Twins visit Bryn at his home - the expensively appointed "Ponderosa" - to demand compensation. Byrn dismisses them with contempt, and The Twins vow revenge. Concurrently, Bryn is embroiled in some dubious drug deals with two local policemen, Terry and Greyo. Terry hates Swansea, declaring it a "pretty shitty city", and, ignoring Greyo's misgivings, decides to expand his illegal operations with Bryn in an attempt to break into the big time. At Barons, a local nightclub, Bryn Cartwright's pretty daughter Bonny expects to win the karaoke semi-finals. Her father greases a few palms, and her secret affair with Dai Rees, self-styled karaoke king, must stack the odds in her favour. Bonny takes the stage and launches into a rendition of "I Will Survive". There is a sudden unwelcome interruption as The Twins leap out behind her and douse her in freshly prepared urine. Barons erupts, but The Twins manage to escape unscathed. Thus begins the feud between Bryn Cartwright and The Twins which forces Terry and Greyo's involvement to do Bryn's dirty work. With a chain of events that becomes more vicious with each turn - Twin Town uses black comedy and a rich ensemble of colourful characters to highlight the absurd nature of revenge and the inevitable chaos that ensues. While some of the vindictive acts are sinisterly funny, before the war is over, homes will burn, and people will die. Who lives? Who dies? You'll have to watch it to find out. This 1997 comedy/drama is un-rated in the US but it would receive an R rating for sexual content and profanity. |
