If anyone was born to play Tom Ripley, it's John Malkovich; the aloofness, erudite manner, cool charisma and chilly superciliousness of his screen persona make the actor a perfect fit for the cultured killer. Malkovich's elegantly malicious performance gives "Ripley's Game" a magnetic center, complemented by Liliana Cavani's efficient direction and an enjoyable retro feel that recalls the British Cold War thrillers of the 1960s. Despite some pedestrian plotting and a final act that could be tighter, this is suspenseful adult entertainment that should find a receptive audience. Fine Line has scheduled domestic release for April.

08/29/02 The Venice International Film Festival starts today.  Word has it the Dougray may attend.  A press conference is scheduled for 11:30 am (Venice time, obviously) for Ripley's Game.  In addition to the midnight premiere on September 1st, screenings will be held on September 2nd, at 3:15pm and 11:00pm.

07/20/02 New release date (bummer!)  The film has been rescheduled from it's October 4th release date, to April 4, 2003 according to Variety.  Apparently the film scratches were a bigger problem than originally anticipated.

06/26/02 Added a new interview with co-star Ray Winstone who confesses even he isn't sure when Ripley's Game will be released.  However, I think it's an old interview that's just recently been published.

Dark Horizons posted 2 new film stills today from Ripley's Game.  The site owner, Garth, confirms that the film is still scheduled for an early October release. Click here to check the photos out.

05/15/02 According to today's Screen Daily, "Fine Line production Ripley's Game starring John Malkovich and Dougray Scott will be screened [at Cannes], while the company is looking to close a renewal of its longterm deal with Entertainment Film Distributors in the UK as well as completing deals in other territories."

The Hollywood Reporter also lists Ripley's Game in their Cannes Film Festival section, along with the release date of October 4, 2002.  Hopefully this means that the film was repaired and the release date is still a go!

Well, it just doesn't sound like the actors had any fun making this film.  Ray Winstone complained about the multi-lingual problems on-set and needing translators all the time. Now in an April 29th article in The New York Times, and re-printed in the Sun-Sentinel, co-star Lena Headey is quoted as saying:
"It was hideous," Headey, now in her late 20s, said with typical bluntness of her experience of working on Ripley's Game. The film, directed by Liliana Cavani and starring John Malkovich, will be released this fall. "I wouldn't want to repeat it. We had no freedom to do anything. But that's what being an actor is all about, that you have an energy that you need to expel and experiment with."

10/29/01 Well, it seems that "Ripley's Game" has become quite an enigma (pun intended).  According to The Hollywood Reporter and Screen Daily, "Ripley's Game" is one of the highly anticipated films for the MIFED Film Festival being held this week in Milan, Italy. According to the aforementioned sources, supposedly it's being touted by Fine Line Features' parent company New Line Cinema.  However, the official MIFED website does not list the film as one of those being screened.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see....

Fine Line has finally listed "Ripley's Game" on their website with a 2002 release.  UpComingMovies gets more specific with an October 2002 US release date!

For whatever reason (September 11th maybe?), "Ripley's Game" is no longer scheduled to be screened at the MIFED film festival in Milan, Italy next week.

Ripley's Game is curently shooting in Northern Italy and Berlin. Directed by Liliana (The Night Porter) Cavani, and starring John Malkovich, Dougray Scott, Ray Winstone, Lena Heady and Chiara Caselli, the movie is based on the third thriller novel (in the series of five) revolving around the amoral killer Tom Ripley, played last year by Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Already adapted for the screen in 1977 by German director Wim Wenders as The American Friend (a version the reclusive American writer Patricia Highsmith hated), the Fine Line Features production headlines Malkovich as Ripley, art connoisseur, harpsichord aficionado, master of souffles and genius of improvizational murder, said to 'detest killing unless absolutely necessary'.
Scorned at a local party by mortally ill English ex-patriot Jonathan Trevanny (Scott), sociopath Ripley devises a sinister game to repay the picture-framer for the insult. Their companions are Sarah (Heady) and Luisa (Caselli) and Winstone plays the hapless 'fixer' Reeves, Ripley's sometime partner in crime.

The movie ends with a climactic triple murder sequence on a moving train (Highsmith did write Strangers on a Train) filmed in utmost secrecy at Rome's Cinecitta Studios. 
Ripley's Game is set for release at the end of 2001.

06/12/01 I received an email this morning from Melisa, who has the Lena Headey website: "I caught a glimpse of RG on HBO, I think it's a clip from E!.  They showed some scenes, plus this particular one where Dougray was shot by who knows who (I think it was him) and a woman kneeling beside him, whom I think is Lena.  Very interesting.  Good publicity.  Too bad I hadn't got time to set the VCR. My bro said there was a brief interview with Malkovich, but I didn't see it at the beginning."   - Thanks Melisa!
05/23/01 Co-star Ray Winstone publicly dissed the filming of "Ripley's Game". 05/11/01 According to Ananova and The Hollywood Reporter, John Malkovich assumed the role of director for the last 3 days of filming when Italian director Liliana Cavani had to be in Milan's La Scala opera house to direct rehearsals for Giuseppe Verdi's "Un Ballo in Maschera."

03/17/01 "Ripley's Game" has experienced some filming delays according to French film-site, AlloCiné.  John Malkovich who was scheduled to start filming his next project on March 26th, ("And Now Ladies and Gentlemen") has had to relinquish the role due to delays with "Ripley's Game".  With the potential threat of an actors strike this summer, director Claude Lelouch could not afford to postpone the start of his film.

01/15/01 According to Variety, John Malkovich has signed on to do to "And Now Ladies and Gentlemen" which is scheduled to start filming March 26th.  This means that filming for Ripley's Game will need to be completed by then.
