"Enigma" delayed due to Sept. 11 attacks?
From the NY Post (11/11/01)
"It's unfortunate that two of the season's promising films, Martin Scorsese's violent-looking historical epic, "Gangs of New York," and Michael Apted's "Enigma," about a mathematician who breaks the key German code of World War II, have been postponed until next year, supposedly for reasons connected with the Sept. 11 horror." - Click here for the full article.

Campaign Wrzesniowa 1939 (Polish WWII historical website) - Thank you Bolas!

Over the past 4 days, I have received numerous emails from Poles regarding their concerns about their fellow countryman's portrayal (and lack thereof) in "Enigma".  Specifically, the film fails to recognize the fact that it was indeed 3 young brilliant Polish mathematicians who originally cracked the Enigma code in 1933.  Also at issue is the only Pole represented in the film "Enigma" is a traitor.  I now take this time to set the historical record straight:

The Enigma machine was built in the 1920s.  German banks and railroads were among the first to use it until the German (Nazi) military saw its potential.

In 1931 and continuing for several years, a hard-up German army clerk secretly obtained more than 300 documents, including the instructions and settings for the Enigma machines and sold them to the French who showed very little interest in their purchase.

Next it was offered to the British who were skeptical that Enigma could be broken and politely declined the offer.

Finally the documents went to the Poles. With the German threat on the horizon, the Polish government realized how important Enigma was.  Three brilliant young Polish mathematicians, Zygalski, Rozycki and Rejewski set off to break the code.  It was Rejewski who realized that the Germans had been stupid enough to use ABCD as the order round the rotor.

In 1939, the Germans added a fourth rotor and the Poles could no longer read the messages. That's when they invited the British and French in on the project.  But soon thereafter, Poland was invaded.

Now, keep in mind that "Enigma" is based upon a NOVEL written by Robert Harris.  It is NOT a documentary on the Enigma machine.  It is a tale of Enigma and the code breakers at Bletchley Park in 1943. Also realize, that during the war, the Germans, although convinced Enigma was foolproof, did change the code on occasions which required the code-breakers at Bletchely Park to start all over again.  This is part of what "Enigma" the film is about.  It's also called entertainment folks.

Jagger is hero of Bletchley Park
Mick Jagger allowed a preview of Enigma, the film he has recently produced, to be screened at Bletchley Park, home to the Enigma machine and the nerve centre of Britain's wartime code-breaking operations. War veterans were given a sneak preview of the film, which stars Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott, at the weekend. True to form, they kept quiet about the screening. What they did reveal, though, was the wrinkly rocker's generosity. A spokesperson revealed: 'Mick has been very supportive of our efforts here. He even donated one of his period cars for the film set.'

The Hollywood Reporter (08/28/01) confirms Mick Jagger's attendance next month in Toronto at the TIFF and reports:

August 28, 2001
"Enigma" will have two screenings at the TIFF:
Friday, September 14, 6:30 pm - Roy Thomson Hall
Saturday, September 15, 9:30 am - Uptown 1

The TIFF has also posted their individual film pages.  Click here to visit their "Enigma" page.  Here's a brief excerpt from their Enigma site:
A smart thriller which pits loyalty against patriotism, Enigma is a phenomenally thought-provoking narrative which reminds us of the delights of a classic Hitchcockian spy thriller. Featuring a magnificent ensemble cast spearheaded by Winslet as Hester, another sparkling addition to her gallery of intriguing, multifaceted characters, Enigma is a stylish, timeless film that is as sophisticated as it is exciting.

I also added a larger version of the photo of Dougray and Kate from the above site to Photos Page 3.

FilmFour has a RealPlayer video interview with Saffron Burrows about the making of "Enigma".  You may need to register (for free) and log-on to the FilmFour Website.  You can then access their page with Saffron Burrows' interview here.

From the National Post (08/22/01):
Jagger, the 58-year-old Rolling Stones frontman, will attend the Toronto festival to promote Enigma, a film he co-produced with Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels. Enigma, which stars Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott, is a romantic thriller about code-breakers who diffused the threat of German U-boats during the Second World War.

The Hollywood Reporter ran an article on the 21st about UK film composers.  Here's an excerpt regarding "Enigma" composer, John Barry:
Barry — who was born in York, England, but now resides in Oyster Bay, New York — has reservations about filmmakers using pop-oriented musicians for scoring. "For some movies, obviously it's very appropriate," says the veteran composer, whose scores total more than 100 film and TV productions including "Dances With Wolves," "Out of Africa" and many James Bond films. "But the main thing about being a movie composer is that you have a very extended dramatic range.

"There are a lot of good composers that are not good dramatists," he continues. "They know how to orchestrate and how to compose, but to be given a book or a piece of film and then write dramatically accurate music that enhances the drama, that's another skill altogether. That's the big question mark: Are the young composers good dramatists?"

Barry, the big daddy of British film scoring, has been choosing projects sparingly in recent years, as befits a 67-year-old, multi-Academy Award-winning titan who received an O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) from the Queen of England in 1999. He has returned to the conductor's podium, however, for Michael Apted's Kate Winslet-starrer, "Enigma," which is based on Robert Harris' best-selling novel with a screenplay by Tom Stoppard. Produced by legendary rocker Mick Jagger in part for the Rolling Stone's Jagged Films, "Enigma" screened this month at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

August 22, 2001 - updated 12:00 and 14:30 pm ET

CORRECTION: In this morning's update, I erroneously reported that tickets for "Enigma" at the TIFF were $187.25 each.  Major error on my part.  That's the price of an 8 day pass for Gala screenings.  The cost has been corrected below and is in fact only $23.55 CA for an advance ticket.

Robert Harris, author of "Enigma", wrote a letter to The Times (London) Editor regarding their "hostile" review and articles.  Click here to read his complete letter.  Bravo Mr. Harris!  Bravo and well done!

The Toronto Sun confirms Jagger's appearance at the TIFF and alludes to additional appearances by director Michael Apted, and co-stars Saffron Burrows and Jeremy Northam.  Click here for the complete article.

Canada.com suggests that Kate Winslet may also attend the "Enigma" screening at the TIFF.

Sunny Film will be releasing "Enigma" in Malaysia sometime in late December or early January.  As soon as they narrow down the date, I'll be sure to post it here.

NOVA will be rebroadcasting their 2-hours special, "Decoding Nazi Secrets" on August 28th.  I caught this last year when it originally aired, and I highly recommend it.  It covers the true story of the Enigma machine and the men and women who cracked the code. Check your local PBS station for times.

US Release date rumor - here are the straight unabashed facts, contrary to what other websites, including the IMDb are posting:
MPI, the US distributor has yet to determine an exact release date for "Enigma" in the US, much less having announced any such tentative date. Although Intermedia Films owns "Enigma", they sold the distribution rights to MPI and as such have little to do with the US release of this film, except to provide support to MPI should they need/want it.  Although a February release date is possible, so is a November or April release date.  According to MPI, they just haven't decided yet, but once they do, they will issue a press release then we'll all know for certain.

According to today's Screen Daily, Dougray is confirmed to attend the Edinburgh Int'l Film Festival for this weekend's screening of "Enigma".  Click here for the full story.

After Geocities lost my Enigma mini-site, it's back and with a new look!  Let me know what you think.

Now for the BIG news!  Thanks to Ruth at DiscoverKate.com for sharing the poster you saw on the front page of this mini-site!

Now for the depressing news.  Contrary to the Internet Movie Database showing an October 10, 2001 US release date for Enigma, I am deeply saddened to report this is incorrect. According to the distributor, MPI, there is no set US release date yet. Rest assured, once they announced the date, I'll be sure to post it here.

Added an interesting article about Mick Jagger and the making of "Enigma":
"The secret life of a rock star" - 08/05/01 Scotland on Sunday

"Enigma" sold out! "Five gala premieres at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival are already sold out - more than two weeks before the event kicks off.  It was revealed today that every ticket has been snapped up for Amelie, the opening film, and Wit, which closes the festival.  Diehard fans have also snapped up all the available seats for Enigma, The Pledge and The Man Who Wasn’t There." - 07/27/01 Edinburgh Evening News (excerpt)

What the papers are saying about "Enigma":
"This year's movie premiere hot ticket looks set to be Enigma, a very British film about code cracking during the Second World War. Hunky Fife man Dougray Scott stars with Kate Winslet and Jeremy Northam." - 08/03/01 Daily Record

"Based on the book by Robert Harris, Michael Apted’s classy thriller has Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott sharing top billing in a ripping yarn about love and military code-cracking, set among the legendary Bletchley Park crowd who broke the Nazi cyphers during the Second World War. Saffron Burrows and Jeremy Northam also star in this best-of-British affair. - 08/04/01 The Times (London)

"Forget Cannes and Venice - Britain's finest Film Festival provides the first glimpse of this autumn's hottest new movies. . ENIGMA Mick Jagger's production company makes an impressive bow with this elegant adaptation of the Robert Harris novel, unearthing skullduggery and betrayal among the Bletchley code-breakers of World War Two. Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet co-star. Odeon, August 18" - 08/03/01 The Express

El Greco at Ain't It Cool News plans on attending the Edinburgh Film Festival and has this to say about "Enigma":
"This is one of the festival's major coups along with the appearances of Sean Penn and Guillermo Del Toro. Enigma is Michael Apted's adaptation of Robert Harris's best selling novel. Dougray Scott is Tom a key boffin in the bid to break the Enigma machine code. Hester (Kate Winslet) is housemate to the disappeared Claire (Saffron Burrows) who just happens to be Tom's ex lover. Hested and Tom team up to track down Claire and lead themselves into a beguiling web of intrigue. Promises to restore the historical blemishes of U-571 and be a modern British mystery thriller in the best sense of the phrase."

The Edinburgh Film Festival has their "Enigma" page up.  Plain and simple with no photos.

The Times (London) rated "Enigma" as one of the Ten must-sees for this year. - 07/23/01

Allan Hunter of The Scotsman also recommends "Enigma":
"Dougray Scott takes another step towards international stardom with his striking performance as the haunted, highly strung mathematician devoted to breaking the wartime enigma code in this intelligent adaptation of the Robert Harris bestseller. Kate Winslet and Jeremy Northam co-star in a highly acclaimed first film from Mick Jagger’s production company. Rumour has it Jagger and Winslet will attend the premiere."
- Thanks Claudia for the find!

Bletchley Park, in a July 9th press release, made the following announcement (exceprt):
The full range of attractions, plus some new ones, will be available. In the pipeline is a new exhibition showcasing the forthcoming film, Enigma. Based on Robert Harris's best-selling novel of the same name, the film, starring Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott, is due for release at the end of September.

July 19, 2001
According to The Sun (07/18/01) Prince Charles will dine with Mick Jagger.
"The get-together was arranged after the Prince said Jagger's film "Enigma" could have a royal premiere.  The star of the film Kate Winslet will also be at the dinner, which will take place near the September 24 premiere."
No mention of Dougray, but surely he was invited too, don't you think?
- Thanks to my pal Marla of Admiring Kate for the find!

Popcorn.com reports that tickets for the event will be available from Saturday July 14, and you can get hold of them by visiting www.edfilmfest.org.uk or phoning 0131 623 8030.

Popcorn.com also has posted their review (positive; minor spoilers) of "Enigma".

I will be cleaning up the translations on the Il Messaggero and Il Matino interviews as soon as I can.  There was a wealth of information coming out of the Taormina film festival and I just didn't have time to translate everything, so please, no more emails about the translations.  :-) Thanks.

Also about the interviews - these were done in a group-style.  If you saw the movie "Notting Hill" with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, remember the scene where she's at the hotel answering questions from a room full of jounalists?  This is how Dougray's interviews were conducted. He was in the Green Room at the festival, answering questions from numerous journalists.

July 11, 2001
"Enigma" will premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival at the Odeon Cinema at 6 pm on Saturday, August 18th.  There is also another screening on Sunday, August 19th at 1 pm at the UGC.

Enigma was shown at Taormino's Teatro Antico Grande Cinema yesterday at 9:30 pm.  Caltanet Cinema's Francesco Alò who is covering the  Taormina Filmfest, had this to say about the film:
"Enigma is a beautiful film...with extraordinary actors...an elegant and classic spy story..."  The film will be shown again today at 10:00 pm at the Grande Cinema Replica.

Dougray Scott, and Enigma's co-producer, Victoria Pearman will be (or make that has been) interviewed today at noon in the festival's Green Room.  Hopefully Taormino's website will post the results of the interview tomorrow.

Il Messaggero (July 2, 2001) had a brief mention that Mick Jagger asked Dougray to attend the festival to help promote the film.  According to Caltanet's website, Kate Winslet was expected to attend the festival as a presenter, but had to cancel her plans at the last minute.
