"Enigma" and co-star Tom Hollander get some nice press from Friday's Daily Mail:
Tom Hollander, who will play the title role in Michael Grandage's production of Moliere's Don Juan at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre for a season from September 26. Grandage asked Simon Nye to write a new translation of the play. Mr Hollander will soon be seen in Michael Apted's film Enigma, an enthralling screen adaptation of Robert Harris's bestselling thriller. Mr Hollander co-stars in the wartime film, which tells the story of how the Brits cracked the German's top secret code, with Dougray Scott, Kate Winslet, Saffron Burrows and the scene-stealing Jeremy Northam. Enigma is the perfect andidote to the high-octane nonsense that will assault our senses through the summer and autumn. - Daily Mail, Baz Bamigboye's column, Juune 22, 2001

June 23, 2001

According to la Repubblica Il Giornale, (an Italian newspaper) "Enigma" will be shown at the Taormina Filmfest on July 1st.  "Seven thousand spectators seated before the immense screen of the Greek Theater, where a state-of-the-art projection and sound system have been installed, will see the European premier of Enigma by Michael Apted, starring Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott (UK, July 1)" - Taormina Filmfest Programme

Apparently there was a special screening of "Enigma" in London recently.  The BFGContact website offers up a positive review of the film and notes, "These two [Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet] are on screen for almost the whole film, and provide the main motor for the plot."  Click here to read the complete review.  CAUTION: minor spoilers
- Thanks to Melisa, Missy and Marla for the heads-up on the review!

I contacted Manhattan Pictures International to inquire about a US release date for "Enigma".  The response, "No specific date for the release is set. However, when one is we will announce it through a regular press release."

And finally, I received the following email yesterday, "This weeks copy of People magazine has a quick blurb saying that "Enigma" is scheduled to open in the USA next year".

According to dotmusic.com, the Rolling Stones "were originally expected to mount a tour this year, but that was put on hold while Mick Jagger worked on the soundtrack to the film "Enigma", which is being produced by his production company".

Cannes or can't?  The preliminary list of films to be shown at this year's Cannes Film Festival
   has been released - it doesn't appear that "Enigma" will be one of them.
According to today's Spanish newspaper, La Vanguardia Digital, "Enigma" still does not have a
   distributor.

The March issue of Total Film gives "Enigma" a mention.  - Thanks to my pal Marla of In Admiration of Kate Winslet for the above find!

Added 2 new photos: one very small one on the set in London and one of Timothy Bentinck, who plays the German U-Boat Commander.

Well, according to various German film-sites, "Enigma" will be opening anywhere from April 2001 (according to Cinema.de) to November 2001 (Zelluiod).  Since German Senator Entertainment is one of the production companies behind "Enigma", you can't help but wonder why the German film-sites have such varied dates.

Speaking of Senator Entertainment, it appears the website is getting ready to show a trailer from "Enigma". Nothing there yet, but it doesn't hurt to keep checking...

According to a March 28th Reuters article, Mick Jagger may be taking "Enigma" to Cannes in May.  Read the complete article here.

"Enigma" is still an enigma!  Internationalmedia removed the German release date of March 29, 2001 from their site.  Is Intermedia Film re-thinking the overall release for this film?
- Thanks to my pal Marla of In Admiration of Kate Winslet for the above news!
Meanwhile, Coming Attractions reports that Vanity Fair mentions "Enigma" should be released in the US later this year.  Do they know something we don't?

March 8, 2001
There was a very brief (3 seconds maybe?) clip of "Enigma" shown on Access Hollywood last night (and in some areas, replayed again today).  It was a segment on the many WWII films being made at this time. There was no mention of Dougray nor Kate and it was a shorter version of the Entertainment Tonight clip shown last month. - Thanks to Morgan and Marla for the news!

March 2, 2001
"Enigma" still an enigma....
After reading yesterday's LineOne news, I immediately wrote to Intermedia to secure a confirmation about the article.  Below is the response I received:
"Discussions are still active regarding the US distribution of ENIGMA and as present Intermedia is unable to confirm who this will be."
So it looks like we're still
in distribution limbo...

March 1, 2001
Did "Enigma" get a US distributor?  Well, according to the source below they did.
"Now that MICHAEL APTED'S much-anticipated film Enigma is to be distributed in the US by Paramount Pictures, the British director has turned his attentions to his next project. He is about to begin production on JENNIFER LOPEZ'S next film, Enough in which the actress-singer plays an abused wife who goes on the run with her daughter. Apted, who directed the most recent James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, is waiting to hear whether he will also be directing the next one." - March 1, 2001 LineOne Entertainment Showbiz News
~~~
I hope the above is true, but I will feel more secure if I can get another confirmation of the story from a second news source.
Dark Horizon's "Film Maven" saw "Enigma" at the American Film Market and gives a brief report:
"Enigma"
This is Michael Apted's latest film. It stars Jeremy Northam, Kate Winslet, and I can't remember the lead. It is a drama involving the attempts to crack the German's U2 Enigma code. This was a very good film, well written, acted, and directed. I don't know when it's coming out but it's worth seeing.
February 22, 2001
Added a new photo of Dougray as Tom Jericho to the photos section.
February 21, 2001
"Enigma" made its bow at the American Film Market today at 1pm.  It will be shown again tomorrow, Thursday, February 22nd at 11:00am.  Here's hoping we hear the good news that a US distributor picks it up very soon!
From Premiere's Sundance Report:
Even those who can’t be here are staying in close contact. After the Michael Apted-directed, Mick Jagger-produced Enigma screened, star Dougray Scott called Apted for an immediate update on audience reaction.
  Sundance Movies To Watch For - US Weekly 02/12/01* (photo) Caution: Spoiler Alert
Here is a perfect example of why I do not  like Entertainment Weekly*:
Film critic Lisa Schwarzbaum's Sundance report: "O Sundance, I drowse through your sentimental tearduck teasers like 'Green Dragon,' Timothy Linh Bui's drama about life among Vietnamese refugees in Fort Pendleton in 1975, your thumpingly lifeless premieres like 'Enigma,' a sodden, heavily-acted drama about British code-breakers during WWII."*
Now keep in mind, this is the same magazine that gave "Forrest Gump" a "C", and "Braveheart"
a "B-", both of which later won Oscars for best picture.  Hmmm, if this be the case, "Enigma" must really be an excellent film!
* Thanks to my pal Marla of In Admiration of Kate Winslet for the above two finds!
February 8, 2001
"Enigma" will be showing at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, California, Wednesday, February 21st at 1:00pm and Thursday, February 22nd at 11:00am - both dates at the AMC theater.  The AFM is a marketplace where producers and sales companies license films to distributors.
Does this mean "Enigma" did not secure a distributor at Sundance in spite of reports that the producers were in serious discussions with distributors?  [see Archives 1/26/01]
February 5, 2001
"Enigma" was mentioned on the ''Ebert and Roeper at the Movies" TV show last night and my pal, Marla of "In Admiration of Kate Winslet" has made some screenshots of Dougray and Kate along with an interview Ebert did with Mick Jagger regarding the film.
- Emanuel Levy, Screen Daily
"The well-ensembled players serve with distinction, most notably Scott as the war-wining cryptologist whose professional competence, mixed with his romantic ineptitude, wins our concern."
- Duane Byrge, The Hollywood Reporter
Good News!  According to IndieWire: ""Enigma" directed by Michael Apted, Billy Wirth's "MacArthur Park", "Green Dragon" by Timothy Linh Bui are all in serious discussions with distributors.
January 23, 2001
Although "Enigma" made it's premiere last night at the Sundance Film Festival, reports seem to be running 48 hours late.  "Enigma" was shown again at 9am this morning, so hopefully, later this evening or early tomorrow we should start seeing more information role in.  However, it will be shown again tomorrow at 6:30pm - perhaps reporters are waiting for the final showing before filing reports?  In any case, as soon as any news comes in, you'll find it here.
Until then, here's a very interesting article about Mick Jagger's views on "Enigma" and Sundance:
  Jagger Journeys Into Film Producing - 01/23/01 Associated Press
"Tom Stoppard's script employs a very complex and highly detailed plot that I found personally fascinating" - Jeffrey Wells, Hollywood Confidential
The first "Enigma" reports are beginning to filter in...
 Nazis and Mick Jagger - 01/23/01 Hollywood Confidential
- Thanks to my pal Marla of In Admiration of Kate Winslet for sending in the first update!
 San Francisco Chronicle 01/23/01 excerpt: "On the star front, Julia Stiles, Cameron Diaz, Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, Elizabeth Hurley, Samuel L. Jackson, Dougray Scott and Kate Winslet all have films at Sundance." - It's just nice to see after months of Kate getting all the plugs for this film to see Dougray finally recognized as a star.
From Christie W. who was one of the lucky fans who saw "Enigma" at last night's showing:
  OK, I'll try not to give away any plot details, but the film was fantastic!  This is not your typical Hollywood popcorn movie.  This is an fascinating film, filled with mystery, intrigue, action, and yes, good old fashion sex (well sorta).  I relate it to a 1940s genre movie - when movies still had plots and told stories and entertained us! (Hollywood should take lessons from the Brits and even Spielberg would be proud of this film!) We need more of these spell-binding movies instead of all the high-budget garbage Hollywood tries to stuff down our throats.
  Dougray was excellent as Jericho, although as a Dougray fan, I would have preferred to see him less emaciated.  Kate was outstanding - I didn't even recognize her at first.  Wonderful actress! Saffron Burrows was the sexy female lead and Jeremy Northam was very good at the semi-   antagonist.
  This film definitely needs to be shown in the US - if for no other reason than to set Americans straight about the true story of Enigma.  But even beyond that - its a wonderful film and  goodness knows we are in need of a wonderful film to watch for a change!
  - Christie W
  Sundance Preview: From the heart of indie film country - 01/18/01 Daily Utah Chronicle
  E! Online 01/19/01 excerpt: "Missed Opportunities...On the acquisition front...I also expect some  noise around Enigma, thanks to its pedigree--Tom Stoppard wrote it, Michael Apted directed  it. And it doesn't hurt that Mick Jagger produced this period piece, along with SNL's Lorne  Michaels, about British WWII code breakers, spies and Nazis. Dougray Scott and Kate  Winslet star. It's sure to be snapped up by the end of its premiere party Monday night."
Also, acquisitions folks are looking forward to the Drew Barrymore-produced Donnie Darko, DiCillo's Double Whammy (starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Hurley), and Michael Apted's WWII thriller Enigma.
