Dougray's character, Eric Vennekor, was supposed to be the
love interest for Jenny Lerner, played by Tea Leoni.

After discovering the comet, the astronomers is killed in a car
accident. This mirrors the real life car accident death (July 18,
1997, in outback Australia) of astronomer Eugene Shoemaker,
who helped discover the Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet.

One of the NASA officials in the movie is played by Gerry Griffin,
who is a former NASA flight director. Griffin presided over the
Apollo 12 mission and later became director of the Johnson
   Space Center in Houston.

There is no place in Virginia where there are mountains within six
miles of the ocean. Yet we are clearly shown a sign on the
freeway saying "Virginia Beaches, 6 mi" right at the base of the
   mountains.

At the start of the movie it says, "Richmond, VA", however when
the family is on the interstate attempting to escape the comet,
a sign reads "Virginia Beach 6 miles." Richmond is actually 60
miles or more from Virginia beach.  This means Sarah's family
would have been heading east, towards the impact, not away
   from it.

At the end of the movie, President Beck states that the tidal
waves went as far inland and the Ohio and Tennesse valleys.
There is no way that Leo and Sarah could have riden that far
inland from their starting point above in the time given.

Astronomers wouldn't use a white light to read a star map they'd
   use a red one.
