The wife of actor Dougray Scott yesterday admitted she blundered by not being at his side at a movie premiere - sparking speculation he was having an affair with co-star Kate Winslet.

Scots star Dougray turned up with Kate, who had just split from her husband Jim Threapleton, at the first screening of their film Enigma in Edinburgh in September.

But his wife, casting director Sarah Trevis, 38, said she missed the event because she was too busy with her own work.

She added: "We should have been wiser. It was an unfortunate set of circumstances.

"I'm very fond of Kate. I didn't expect her to leave her husband at the same time as the film came out and I didn't think people would put two and two together and make five.

"The trouble was, nobody reported that Dougray's mother was there. They said he was on his own."

The West London home Sarah shares with Dougray and their three-year-old twins, Eden and Gabriel, was besieged by the media.

Sarah said: "On one occasion, it was reported that Dougray had arrived back at the house in the morning - but actually, he was upstairs in bed.

"We've always been in love."
