Sun Microsystems golf marathon dinner
by Terry Murden
As a guest of the Sun Microsystems golf marathon
dinner at Turnberry last week, I didn't expect to be standing in the
rain at 10.30pm, squinting in the gloom to see the ball at the 18th
hole. It was impossible to recognise the two golfers slugging out this
last leg of a day-long marathon. They were the athlete Sir Steven
Redgrave and Mission Impossible actor Dougray Scott.
Their efforts, to raise money for a children's charity, were supposed
to involve rounds at four Scottish courses. But because of the
wretched weather, St. Andrews was abandoned while lightning hampered
play at Gleneagles. As a postscript, Redgrave left his passport in a
hire car and could not join his family in Spain. For reasons best
known to themselves, both said they'd do it again next year.
