DESPITE the early morning rain, the Markinch Highland Games once again, proved to be a huge success on Sunday

As the rain relented, the crowds poured into John Dixon Park, with many hoping to catch a glimpse of Games Chieftain, Glenrothes lad tuned Hollywood megastar Dougray Scott.

The former Auchmuty High School pupil proved to be extremely popular. As well as carrying out the Chieftain's duties, he took time out to have his photograph taken and sign autographs for everyone who asked.

Dougray also started the children's races in which everyone taking part received a special Queen's Jubilee medal.

And, in an emotional reply to the massed pipe bands, he informed the crowd that he would return to the games as Chieftain in 2003.

Organiser Shane Fenton, said: ''There is no doubt that his presence was the main reason for such a terrific crowd on a day of inclement weather and the Games committee are absolutely delighted that he has pledged to return next year.''

Despite the wet underfoot conditions, the damage to the park was minimal compared to three years ago.

When the action got under way, Frances Brebner, from Peterhead, retained his 28lb weight for distance championship.

On the track, cycling superstar, Evan Oliphant, from Wick, made a clean sweep of all four events, including the 8,000 metres Scottish Championship.

The £200 top prize in the Lomond Homes 90 metres went to Hawick's Mark Landels. Strathclyde Police came out on top in the Grade One pipe band competition.

Another star in attendance was recent Stars In Your Eyes winner, Stewart 'Elvis' Duff, who is also a former winner of the cycle championship at the games.
