Dougray Scott's Hidden Role
Scottish actor Dougray Scott is coming out of the closet - in the
role of a young Irish soldier who spent nearly four years hiding in a
kitchen cupboard. The Enigma star will portray Patrick Fowler in
the as yet untitled film, which will be shot in France this summer.
Dublin-born Fowler became separated from his regiment, the 11th Hussars,
during fighting in northern France in 1914. He hid in woods before being
found by a local man who took him to the house owned by his
mother-in-law Marie Belmont Gobert. She and her daughter Angele hid him
there, but he was forced to take refuge in a tiny cupboard when German
troops were billeted in the house. Fowler was fed left-over scraps and
let out at night to stretch when the coast was clear. His own regiment
finally liberated the village of Bertry in 1918.
