On-set report from an 'Extra'
by Graham Steel
I amazingly managed to get 2 days work as an extra
last week on C and F (I think it was my beard that swung it). Shooting
was at Dover Castle in Kent, England, a wonderfully historical pile of
bricks on the English Channel coast.
I had one scene with Dougray Scott on Wednesday morning, where I (as one
of several Merchant Prisoners) was marched through an arch whilst being
liberally assaulted by Cromwell's soldiers on either side of me. (They
were supposed to be acting but I think they secretly enjoyed it ...)
Mr Scott was mounted on a beautiful grey horse about twenty feet
behind me. When you watch the movie, I am the one with the huge fright
wig and the extremely pained expression, owing to the fact that Wardrobe
gave me a pair of shoes about a size too small, and I had been on my
feet for about four hours at that time.
On Thursday I was in a scene with James Bolam (a much loved TV 'name' in
the UK but not well known, I think, in the States) and an actress called
Melissa Knatchbull. I am not overly familiar with Ms Knatchbull's work,
but a clue may be noted when one is aware that 'Knatchbull' (a fairly
unusual name) is the real family name of Lord Brabourne, aka John
Brabourne, the noted movie producer. It's not what you
know, but who you know ....
