Dougray's New Stage Role

FILM star Dougray Scott has gone back to his roots for his latest role ... as honorary president of Glenrothes Amateur Musical Association.

The Mission Impossible II star, who was born and bred in the town, was delighted to accept the prestigious role during the company’s last session.

The former pupil of Auchmuty High School accepted the position because of his own ties with the town, as well as having an interest in GAMA and the people involved.

Publicity manager Pam Garland said the company was ‘delighted’ that such a high profile actor had agreed to accept the role.

She said: ‘‘We were very pleased when he agreed to do it.

‘‘We approached him when he was doing Mission Impossible II at the time and he was also about to get married, so we were very glad he took the time to consider becoming our honorary president.’’

Meanwhile, GAMA is set to break with tradition this year by holding their annual show a week early.

For many years, it has have staged its production during the second week in October but this year members brought it forward to October 2-6 at Rothes Halls.

This year’s show is Lionel Barts’ acclaimed adaption of Dickens ‘‘Oliver Twist’’ and the key roles played by children prompted the change.

GAMA was concerned casting for roles of Oliver and the Artful Dodger would be hit by changes to schools’ autumn holidays.

Behind the scenes, this year Iain Hughes will tackle the combined role of producer and choreographer, while the company has welcomed welcomes Robert Anthony as musical director and John Baillie as accompanist once more.

Members are also in the process of contacting actors Ron Moody and Robert Lindsay — who have both performed the principal role of Fagin — in the hope of having them write a short piece for the show’s programme or offering advice to this year’s stars.

The recent AGM elected a new committee comprising: Patrick Cascianni (president), Rita Aitken (vice president), Andrew Butchart (secretary), Jean Salmond (treasurer), Claire Mackinlay (business manager) and Pam Garland(publicity manager). Committee: Fiona Butchart, Cathie Brannigan, Margaret Hunter, Margo Imrie, Margo McKay, Marilyn Maule and Alice Oliphant.

The first members meetingis on Wednesday (Match 7) at 7.30 p.m. in Rothes at 7.30 p.m when there will be an opportunity to meet the new production team and audition pieces will be given out.
