MIKE BARKER’S CROMWELL & FAIRFAX
COMMENCES PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE
UK

Natural Nylon and IAC announce
start on eagerly-awaited historical drama

LONDON, 23rd January 2002:
Eleven weeks of principal photography commenced 20th January 2002, on locations across the UK and at Shepperton Studios on British director Mike Barker’s CROMWELL & FAIRFAX, with TIM ROTH (Planet of the Apes, Reservoir Dogs, Rob Roy) and DOUGRAY SCOTT (Mission Impossible II, Enigma) in the title roles, announced Natural Nylon producer Kevin Loader (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) and IAC Film’s Guy Collins and Keith Cousins today.

Roth and Scott, two of the hottest acting talents of their generation, are joined by RUPERT EVERETT (My Best Friend’s Wedding, An Ideal Husband) in the role of King Charles I and OLIVIA WILLIAMS (The Sixth Sense, Below) as Lady Anne Fairfax.

Based on an original screenplay by young British writer Jenny Mayhew, CROMWELL & FAIRFAX is a dramatic and exciting journey through 17th century England.   Shot in an edgy and contemporary style, the film will explore how the love and loyalty between two of the most fascinating figures of the English Civil Wars turned to betrayal and political intrigue.

Sir Thomas Fairfax (Dougray Scott), though aristocratic by birth, commanded the Parliamentary armies during the English Civil Wars.  In the aftermath of years of bloodshed and chaos, Fairfax found himself increasingly stranded between his loyalty to the revolutionary cause of his comrade Oliver Cromwell (Tim Roth) and the loyalty he owed to his wife Lady Anne (Olivia Williams) and their shared class.   Cromwell’s determination to change the face of English society led directly to the Execution of King Charles I – an act of treachery that Fairfax was unable to condone.

Mike Barker (Best Laid Plans, The James Gang), currently one of Britain’s most sought after directing talents, intends to combine the scale of a film such as Elizabeth with the emotional and moral core of a work like A Man for All Seasons.

Joining Barker is pioneering young Danish Cinematographer Eigil Bryld. His “visually audacious” and “seductively beautiful” style has won him critical acclaim for his work on the BBC’s forthcoming two-part version of Crime and Punishment, as well as accolades at the San Sebastian Film Festival for The Eighteenth and Before The Storm, as well as a BAFTA Best Cinematography award for Wisconsin Death Trap.

Completing the top-notch crew are award-winning Production Designer Sophie Becher (The Borrowers, Twelfth Night, Loch Ness, Best Laid Plans);  Oscar and BAFTA award-winning Make-up and Hair Designer Christine Blundell (Topsy Turvy, Me Without You, The Fully Monty, 7 Years in Tibet) and BAFTA and Emmy nominated Costume Designer John Bloomfield (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Waterworld).

CROMWELL & FAIRFAX  is produced by Kevin Loader on behalf of Natural Nylon Entertainment and Corsan NV’s Paul Breuls, executive produced by IAC Film’s Guy Collins, Keith Cousins and Michael Ryan, Screenland’s Rudolf G. Weismeier and Christopher Petzel and co-produced by Kathy Sykes.  Associate Producers are Bradley Adams and Dougray Scott.
